Lucky or Unlucky

“Worth of a Soul” By Liz Lemon Swindle

My young son began school this week. He had a difficult time the first couple of days. In his words it was “a trip, not a good one, with lots of unlucky things happening”.

He began listing of hard things that happened. Then he looked at me and asked, “That’s pretty unlucky don’t you think. I am unlucky.”

Before I could even respond he continued, “But I did have this one lucky thing happen.”

Without prodding he begin another list, this time of lucky things that happened during those days.

He finally paused and took a breathe. Sighing he said, “I guess I can’t say I am unlucky. There were some unlucky things, but lucky ones too. And if there is some lucky, then can you even be considered unlucky. Because some luck is still lucky.”

As he sat rambling and trying to sort his thoughts out I was touched by the wisdom of this young child. Amidst what was truly a hard time for him, he was able to see that there was still good things happening too.

My mind jumped to a quote I had heard during church.

“…If we look for the good we shall surely find it…” Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf

No matter what darkness, hard times, or unlucky streaks we are in; if we look for the good, we will find it.
